Chosen Ones by Tiffany Truitt: Review

Publisher: Entangled Publishing (June 12, 2012)
Paperback: 400 Pages
Series: Lost Souls # 1
Genre: Tiffany's Website| Blog |Twitter
From Goodreads. What if you were mankind’s last chance at survival? Sixteen-year-old Tess lives in a compound in what was once the Western United States, now decimated after a devastating fourth World War. But long before that, life as we knew it had been irrevocably changed, as women mysteriously lost the ability to bring forth life. Faced with the extinction of the human race, the government began the Council of Creators, meant to search out alternative methods of creating life. The resulting artificial human beings, or Chosen Ones, were extraordinarily beautiful, unbelievably strong, and unabashedly deadly. Life is bleak, but uncomplicated for Tess as she follows the rigid rules of her dystopian society, until the day she begins work at Templeton, the training facility for newly created Chosen Ones. There, she meets James, a Chosen One whose odd love of music and reading rivals only her own. The attraction between the two is immediate in its intensity—and overwhelming in its danger. But there is more to the goings-on at Templeton than Tess ever knew, and as the veil is lifted from her eyes, she uncovers a dark underground movement bent not on taking down the Chosen Ones, but the Council itself. Will Tess be able to stand up to those who would oppress her, even if it means giving up the only happiness in her life?

52 Reasons to Hate My Father by Jessica Brody: Interview & Book Trailer

What was your "what if" question when the idea for 52 Reasons jumped into your head?

For this book it was more of a “wouldn’t it be cool?” question. I was watching a meter maid write a parking ticket and I thought, “wouldn’t it be cool to be a meter maid…but only for a week.” Then I started to brainstorm a bunch of other jobs I’d like to try for only one week. Suddenly I had the idea of a girl who had to do 52 jobs...one for every week of the year. Then I asked myself, “who would be the funniest character to have to do that?” And the answer was almost immediate: “A spoiled heiress!”

If you were an overnight billionaire heiress, what would be the first thing you would spend your money on? The second thing?

Demonically Tempted by Stacey Kennedy: Guest Post & Giveaway {Bewitching Book Tours}

I’m thrilled to be stopping by I Just Want to Sit Here and Read to share my newest release, DEMONICALLY TEMPTED. So, it’s fun as an author to read reviews once a book comes out. Maybe even more so in this book because I always wondered how many people knew the “secret” in SUPERNATURALLY KISSED.

Of course, I can’t say what the “secret” is because that will just spoil the fun! But it’s amusing in part because I knew exactly what would happen by the end of DEMONICALLY TEMPTED, and I purposely dropped a few clues in SUPERNATURALLY KISSED that pretty much laid it out there.

The Fallen Queen by Jane Kindred: Guest Post & Giveaway {Entangled Book Tour}

Firespirit Physiology by Jane Kindred

The celestial races in my House of Arkhangel’sk series (both angel and demon) are ruled by one of the four cardinal elements: air, fire, earth, and water. The pure firespirits are the Cherubim, Seraphim, and Ophanim—angels of the Second Choir—but among the demons, who are the product of interbreeding among angels of different choirs, any one of the four elements might be dominant.

I decided to make my demon thief, Vasily, a firespirit. His outward appearance is much like any other ordinary angel or human—well, except for his flame-red dreadlocks, his scruffy red mutton chops, the fact that he’s built like a Cossack warrior, and the rows of spiked piercings down either side of his neck.

Solstice by Donna Burguess: Guest Post {Bewitching Book Tours}

Things Authors Don’t Want to Hear from People Who Don’t Write
A guest post by Donna Burgess

Because of the wonderful era of digital publishing we now live in, whether you’re a seasoned professional or someone who is just getting his or her feet wet, there has never been a better time to be a writer. No matter your experience, the one thing that makes a person a writer is turning out a completed piece of work. Many people think that’s a breeze—and true, everyone has a story inside them—but getting that story down on paper (or monitor) takes more than just saying you want to do it. It takes actually DOING it. Until then, think about what you say to those who have managed to do it.

When an exchange of stolen goods in the Feriana marketplace turns sour, Isabeau stumbles from the encounter bruised and laden with new orders to complete an even larger heist. With her child’s life at stake, there’s no room for error—or allies.

Armed with a lethal book of spells, she strikes a dangerous bargain with Roland Bernhard. Steal a shipment of salt from the Feriana colony, and she’ll have her freedom—and her daughter. It’s all she’s ever wanted. At least it was…until she runs into Dillon Preston.

Dillon is out of commission after a mine explosion, and itching for a distraction. He gets it when the female who saved his leg arrives at the colony with nothing but flimsy excuses and even flimsier attire. She’s after something, but is it him—or the salt?

Trapped in a desperate bid to gain true freedom, Isabeau is willing to sacrifice her life for her daughter’s, but Dillon has other plans. He wants a package deal, and he’s not willing to lose either female, even if it means the future king of Sere’s head will roll.

Warning: This title contains a heroine desperate to save her daughter and a hero determined to make them a family. It also includes wings, horns and other assorted appendages.

Shadows Deep by Cege Smith: Guest Post {CBLS Promotions}

Sneaking in the Romance by Cege Smith

I write what I feel like I know well: ghosts, demons, vampires, zombies, witches and the like. I fell in love with Stephen King, Clive Barker, and Dean Koontz’s books when I was in middle school, and I’d stay up late hiding under the covers to read just a few more pages. These masters of horror scared the living daylights out of me, but I became a junkie and couldn’t get enough. My first attempt at writing a novel, when I was twelve, was about a haunted house.

But something happened once my book-devouring nature became obvious to those around me. (I’m sure it had nothing to do with coming home from the library laden down with books.) Boxes of hand-me-down paperbacks started to arrive from my “never-met-a-garage-sale-she-didn’t-like” grandmother. These paperbacks were most often Harlequin romances which she probably picked up for pennies. I must have run out of books to read the day I finally dug into one of those boxes, because I was convinced that romance just wasn’t my thing.

From Goodreads. Our journey began in fire...

Gideon Cross came into my life like lightning in the darkness—beautiful and brilliant, jagged and white-hot. I was drawn to him as I'd never been to anything or anyone in my life. I craved his touch like a drug, even knowing it would weaken me. I was flawed and damaged, and he opened those cracks in me so easily...

Gideon knew. He had demons of his own. And we would become the mirrors that reflected each other's most private wounds... and desires.

The bonds of his love transformed me, even as I prayed that the torment of our pasts didn't tear us apart...

Scary School by Derek Taylor Kent: Guest Post & Giveaways

Why Reading my Book Series Scary School is Guaranteed to Turn your Kid into a Well-adjusted, Ivy League-bound, World-beater Dynamo
By Derek the Ghost

Question: Are you actually smarter because you read, or is it just our culture’s perception of reading that merely makes you appear smarter? Here’s the answer. You’re actually smarter.

It goes without saying that reading requires a basic education. But more importantly, it requires that the brain function in a heightened state of stimulation called Alpha Mode. During Alpha Mode there’s an innumerable amount of split-second decisions taking place. The brain is constantly deciphering letters and interpreting their meaning while at the same time forming imagery to correlate with each phrase. It requires a lot of sub-conscious brain energy and millions of electrical reactions.

What If by Kelly Rae: Guest Post & Giveaway {Bewitching Book Tours}

Why I Write Romance
by Kelly Rae

There are people that I meet who visibly cringe when I say I write romance novels. Usually they will say, “You mean like Fabio romances?” with a tone that insinuates they are not impressed. To which I reply, “Well no, not exactly, but they are love story and yes they contain sex.” I suppose what they are visualizing is a book with a half-naked man and a woman being ravaged on the cover. What If… my current release does not resemble this, however I certainly won’t be ruling it out as a possible choice. I’m not scared of a little ravaging, after all.

The Cruise - All That Glitters by Jaye Frances: Guest Post & Giveaway

Thank you, Kate, for having me back on I Just Wanna Sit Here and Read with my new romantic comedy, The Cruise – All That Glitters. I really appreciate the opportunity to give your readers a sneak peek and offer a kindle eBook giveaway.

I took my first cruise a little over twenty years ago. At that time, the industry was still tempting passengers with the illusion of a floating palace filled with promises of sensual pleasure, where uninhibited fantasies were as available as room service, and the romance of a lifetime was always waiting in the adjacent deck chair. The reality was often a disappointing mixture of overcrowded pools, tacky, neon-filled public areas, and a tiny, closet-sized cabin that was in constant vibration—not the ideal environment for an amorous encounter.

Those early cruise ship experiences became the influence for The Cruise – All That Glitters, especially that sense of euphoric abandon, when the cares of work and responsibility were exchanged for the chance to explore our passions, desires and dreams.

Before I Wake by Rachel Vincent: Interview & Giveaway {KismetBT}

Q: Hi Rachel! I am such a huge fan! Tell me, did you always know the ending to the Soul Screamers series before you started writing? Is that something that you demand from your ideas before you start writing?

A: Thank you! And no, I didn't know the end of the series until I started plotting the final book, WITH ALL MY SOUL, last month. But I did know how many books I wanted to write in Kaylee's world, and what the theme of each book would be.

Q: Were there any inspirations for the main characters either emotionally or physically from your own life? (Kaylee, Todd, Nash)

A: No, they're fictitious characters, and though their strengths are idealized sometimes, they have characteristics and flaws I see in real life, in real people. I think of them as real people, which helps me keep them in character, if that makes sense.

Q: I love that the Netherworld terrifies me, how did you envision that world in your head initially? Has it changed much as the books have progressed?

From Goodreads. Generations ago, a genetic experiment gone wrong—the Reduction—decimated humanity, giving rise to a Luddite nobility who outlawed most technology.

Elliot North has always known her place in this world. Four years ago Elliot refused to run away with her childhood sweetheart, the servant Kai, choosing duty to her family’s estate over love. Since then the world has changed: a new class of Post-Reductionists is jumpstarting the wheel of progress, and Elliot’s estate is foundering, forcing her to rent land to the mysterious Cloud Fleet, a group of shipbuilders that includes renowned explorer Captain Malakai Wentforth—an almost unrecognizable Kai. And while Elliot wonders if this could be their second chance, Kai seems determined to show Elliot exactly what she gave up when she let him go.

But Elliot soon discovers her old friend carries a secret—one that could change their society . . . or bring it to its knees. And again, she’s faced with a choice: cling to what she’s been raised to believe, or cast her lot with the only boy she’s ever loved, even if she’s lost him forever.

Inspired by Jane Austen’s Persuasion, For Darkness Shows the Stars is a breathtaking romance about opening your mind to the future and your heart to the one person you know can break it.

--A love that feels epic even though the characters and the setting are relatable

They sit at long tables under grape arbors. Heavy bunches of grapes hang from the vines. An eight-piece dance band in white tuxes and black bow ties plays tunes from every decade. Heavy silver dessert forks and coffee spoons rest untouched on the linen tablecloth. She can’t eat another bite. All the glasses, at least, she has used: white wine, red wine, water.

A light breeze comes up. It feels heavenly on her face. With nightfall, the heat has gone out of the air. The heat must be trapped in these old stone walls — the walls of the farmhouse, the walls surrounding the vineyard. The aroma of fresh herbs floats from a nearby garden, rosemary, and mint, she thinks as she watches people dancing. The bride, her beautiful white dress with the daring silk bodice; the groom’s parents, a man with close-cropped gray hair and a red rose in his lapel, and his wife in a shimmering blue dress that looks specially made by an Italian designer.

From Goodreads. The demon Lilith has been destroyed and Jace has been freed from her captivity. But when the Shadowhunters arrive to rescue him, they find only blood and broken glass. Not only is the boy Clary loves missing–but so is the boy she hates, Sebastian, the son of her father Valentine: a son determined to succeed where their father failed, and bring the Shadowhunters to their knees.

No magic the Clave can summon can locate either boy, but Jace cannot stay away—not from Clary. When they meet again Clary discovers the horror Lilith’s dying magic has wrought—Jace is no longer the boy she loved. He and Sebastian are now bound to each other, and Jace has become what he most feared: a true servant of Valentine’s evil. The Clave is determined to destroy Sebastian, but there is no way to harm one boy without destroying the other. Will the Shadowhunters hesitate to kill one of their own?

Only a small band of Clary and Jace’s friends and family believe that Jace can still be saved — and that the fate of the Shadowhunters’ future may hinge on that salvation. They must defy the Clave and strike out on their own. Alec, Magnus, Simon and Isabelle must work together to save Jace: bargaining with the sinister Faerie Queen, contemplating deals with demons, and turning at last to the Iron Sisters, the reclusive and merciless weapons makers for the Shadowhunters, who tell them that no weapon on this earth can sever the bond between Sebastian and Jace. Their only chance of cutting Jace free is to challenge Heaven and Hell — a risk that could claim any, or all, of their lives.

And they must do it without Clary. For Clary has gone into the heart of darkness, to play a dangerous game utterly alone. The price of losing the game is not just her own life, but Jace’s soul. She’s willing to do anything for Jace, but can she even still trust him? Or is he truly lost? What price is too high to pay, even for love?

Darkness threatens to claim the Shadowhunters in the harrowing fifth book of the Mortal Instruments series.

My almost interview with Chelsan Derée…

I waited at the café with an empty chair across from me. I’m over three hundred years old by the way. The year is 2320 and since a tiny little pill called Age-pro was invented in 2020 (a pill that stops the aging process) I look really great for my age. I’m almost fifty though, so to most people in the year 2320 I look pretty old. Everyone starts taking the drug at eighteen so I’m basically stuck in a world of teenagers. The hardest part is trying to figure out if they’re really eighteen or in their hundreds.

From Goodreads. I’ve seen so many freaky things since I started attending Mythos Academy last fall. I know I’m supposed to be a fearless warrior, but most of the time, I feel like I’m just waiting for the next Bad, Bad Thing to happen. Like someone trying to kill me—again.

Everyone at Mythos Academy knows me as Gwen Frost, the Gypsy girl who uses her psychometry magic to find lost objects—and who just may be dating Logan Quinn, the hottest guy in school. But I’m also the girl the Reapers of Chaos want dead in the worst way. The Reapers are the baddest of the bad, the people who murdered my mom. So why do they have it in for me?

It turns out my mom hid a powerful artifact called the Helheim Dagger before she died. Now, the Reapers will do anything to get it back. They think I know where the dagger is hidden, but this is one thing I can’t use my magic to find. All I do know is that the Reapers are coming for me—and I’m in for the fight of my life.

Lies Beneath by Anne Greenwood Brown: This Or That {Teen Book Scene}

Hot Chocolate or Tea? Hot Chocolate, but my real preference is a Medium Skim Latté, please.

New Years Eve or Christmas? Christmas. I love the slooooww build. New Years Eve is over before I know what day it is.
