Eclipse Advanced Screening Review

Last night I attended the Volturi Ventures New York Event for Eclipse. I got into line around 3:00 PM for the 8:30 PM show. I have to say, through the sweat, tears, and overall anxiety, this even was so worth it. Inside the theater I got really amazing seats and even won a raffle prize! I so wanted to win the Chaske Spencer brunch tickets, but sadly I did not, at least I did get my donation to United Global Shift.

*SPOILER ALERT*
There may be some spoilers ahead if you have not seen the movie yet, you have been warned!
*SPOILER ALERT*

I LOVED this movie. Eclipse is my favorite book out of the series and seeing it on screen was s dream come true. They touched on every important scene perfectly and the movie went seamlessly and fast!

The romance scenes (Jake & Bella kiss X 2, leg hitch, and tent scene) were perfect! My stomach was knotted in the right places and I felt like I was going through all the emotions again like I did while reading.

In terms of book to movie, this movie hit the nail on the head. Like I said before, everything that was important and needed to make me happy was there. Also, the background stories of Rosalie and Jasper were pretty spectacular. The biggest difference between the book to movie was the perspectives outside of Bella's first person narrative. We got to see how Riley became a vampire and trained the newborns, and also the Cullen's and werewolves chasing Victoria and fighting the newborns. The action scenes were definitely epic.

Each of the actors stepped it up as well. I was not a Kristen Stewart fan in the previous movies, but after Eclipse I have changed my mind. Whatever David Slade did to "Bella", I hope she keeps it up! Taylor Lautner did a phenomenal job too. I was heart-broken each time he tried to convince Bella that she was in love with him. He also kept my laughing with his sarcasm and quips. And Robert Pattinson, amazing as usual, 'nuff said. My stand-out actor in this movie was Jackson Rathborne. The scenes from the South were just as I imagined, and his training session with the Cullens were fun and action-packed.

My one critique would be that I wish there were not as many extreme closeups of the actors. I felt like the whole movie was being played from forehead to chin and after a while I kept wanting to see more of the bigger "picture" versus the flawless skin of the actors.

Overall, this movie is, in my opinion, the best yet and it is definitely not one to be missed!

My Soul to Take & My Soul to Save (Rachel Vincent) Mini-Reviews

Publisher: Harlequin (August 1st 2009)
Paperback: 279 pages
She doesn't see dead people, but…
She senses when someone near her is about to die. And when that happens, a force beyond her control compels her to scream bloody murder. Literally.

Kaylee just wants to enjoy having caught the attention of the hottest guy in school. But a normal date is hard to come by when Nash seems to know more about her need to scream than she does. And when classmates start dropping dead for no apparent reason, only Kaylee knows who'll be next… (Source)

Review
MY SOUL TO TAKE, by Rachel Vincent, was the perfect beginning for what looks like an amazing series. My expectations for a "soul screamer" were nothing like what was portrayed, and I was thrilled to experience it along with Kaylee. And the history behind her gift was facinating to read. Vincent dropped tidbits of information about Kaylee's talent very slowly as the book progressed which kept me engaged.

The story between Kaylee and Nash was very sweet. I was a bit skeptical at first because I did not want Kaylee to get hurt, but an unexpected turn of events made me smile with satisfaction. I also was intrigued by Tod and his abilities along with his connection to Nash. I think he is the perfect balance for Kaylee and Nash's soul-saving team.

I really loved getting to experience the unfamiliar territory of Kaylee's keening abilities right along with her. Vincent really did a fantastic job creating this amazing world of bean sidhes and the dangers that come with the responsibility.

Publisher: by Harlequin Teen (Dec. 29, 2009)
Paperback: 279 pages
“If she were going to die, I’d already be screaming. I’m a banshee. That’s what we do.”

The last thing Kaylee needs right now is to be skipping school, breaking her dad’s ironclad curfew and putting her boyfriend’s loyalty to the test. But starry-eyed teens are trading their souls for a flickering lifetime of fame and fortune in exchange for eternity in the Netherworld — a consequence they can’t possibly understand. Kaylee can’t let that happen, even if trying to save their souls means putting her own at risk.... (Source)

Review
MY SOUL TO SAVE, by Rachel Vincent, was a new adventure for Kaylee and her blossoming abilities as a bean sidhe. With the swoon-worthy Nash, and his reaper-brother Tod at her side, Kaylee pushed the boundaries to save stolen souls.

I really love Kaylee as a character and this book is no different, I am in awe of her compassion and determination to make things right for those who were wronged. In this case, pop-stars. Kaylee has such a big heart, but I can see her persistence getting her in more trouble as she tests her limits with dangerous non-humans.

The relationship between Kaylee and Nash was intensified in this book. I wish Kaylee had more self-confidence to see how crazy Nash is about her! I can't wait to see where there relationship goes in the next book.

Overall, another amazing book from Rachel Vincent in the Soul Screamers series. Next up, My Soul to Keep.

The Crescent (Jordan Deen) Review

Publisher: Black Rose Writing (January 14, 2010)
Paperback: 187 pages
Book from Book It Forward Tours
Becoming a werewolf is not an option for seventeen-year-old Lacey Quinn, but death can be a strong motivator. Lacey is so focused on her future that everyday life has passed her by. Counting down the days to her eighteenth birthday, Lacey is almost home free. But when she falls for the mysterious Alex Morris, she lands in the middle of an ancient war between two enemy wolf packs. Tempting dreams, tantalizing lies and a dangerous love triangle ensues leaving Lacey heartbroken and confused. Lacey's fate rests in the hands of Alex and Brandon, but both are pulling her strings for their own agendas. Even as she slips further into the dark world of werewolves, Lacey struggles to find the truth and save the only family she's ever know. (Source)

Review
THE CRESCENT, by Jordan Deen, was an original spin on werewolves. Deen created the perfect setting for understanding her take on werewolves and the primal thoughts and urges that surround their being.

This book stands out on its own in terms of creativity. The connection that Lacey shared with both Brandon and Alex was equally tempting and passionate. With Brandon it was more of a mental connection and with Alex it was definitely physical. The decision to choose from the brain or body was Lacey's impossible choice. I liked the tension created from both wolf packs to "get" Lacey on either side. This added tension created a really great love triangle and I soon became anxious for its resolution.

One thing that bothered me about this book was the immediate romance between Lacey and Alex. I felt that there should have been a bit more of a courtship between the two, or at least more questions from Lacey on why he jumped right into the relationship. Alex was a bit too clingy for my taste and Lacey constantly wondered why, but hesitated to take a step back herself. And I wish there could have been more involvement for Brandon in the relationship, but maybe there will be in the sequel.

How great is this cover? I was immediately drawn in by the midst-covered wolf.

I enjoyed this supernatural tale of fate versus choice and I am excited to read the sequel Half Moon, where I hope many of my questions will be answered.

All I can say is "wow". I think these two movies are going to be the best of all of them. I cannot wait to see how they portray all of my favorite scenes from the book.

What did you think of the trailer?

Arson (Estevan Vega) Review

Publisher: Tate Publishing (May 4, 2010)
Paperback: 318 pages
Book from Traveling Arc Tours
ARSON GABLE FEELS LIKE A FREAK. HE CAN CREATE FIRE. HE NEVER ASKED FOR IT. HE NEVER WANTED IT. BUT HE CAN'T SHUT IT OFF.

Before now, three things were true: he both loved and despised his grandmother; his life was going nowhere; and he was alone. But when a strange girl-who feels more normal behind a mask than inside her own skin-moves in next door, Arson hopes to find something he's never had: purpose. Using what he fears the most about himself, Arson must face his consuming past and confront the nightmare that is present as he walks the fine line between boy and monster. Dark, moody, and breathtakingly relevant, Arson, the chilling chronicle of an isolated boy with unimaginable ability, is sure to ignite the hearts and minds of a new generation. (Source)

Review
ARSON, by Estevan Vega, was an exceptional story about a peculiar boy and his remarkable gift of creating fire with his mind. Vega took my mind right out of its comfort zone and threw me for a loop with this amazing story.

What I loved more than anything about this book were the main characters, Arson and Emery. They were two peas in a pod together and their relationship blossomed wonderfully. They had much in common with not-so-perfect family lives and both being outsiders. Emery seemed a bit bizarre with her obession with her mask, but Arson immediately wanted to know who was behind it, unlike others who just stared and ridiculed. Emery, in turn, wanted to know what made Arson tick. I like reading books about those on the "other side of the tracks" with troubled families and the like. It takes me to another understanding of people outside popular groups and the need to be in them.

The development of the minor characters was equally interesting. I thought I had most of them pegged from the beginning but I was wrong. From the beginning, I wanted to learn about the immediate mood changes of Grandma Kay. I had my own idea about it, but Vega pulled the metaphorical rug from right under me. The realizations of who these characters were in the latter part of the book quicken my reading pace to figure it out.

The element of fire in this book was very interesting. Arson knew he had to control his emotions to keep the fire in check, but at times the build-up was excruciating. Vega explored the depths of Arson's guilt and distress about his gift so fully, it was at times very emotional and disheartening. But the consquences of not freely exploring his gift created devesating results.

The cover art is really fantastic with elements of Emery (mask) and Arson (fire). The pulling together of these ideas makes this book jump right off the shelf.

The last couple chapters unraveled some new situations, and a massive cliffhanger that makes me need to read the sequel as soon as possible. Overall, this book was incredibly unique and creative, and I highly recommend it.

Getting Revenge on Lauren Wood (Eileen Cook) Review

Publisher: January 5th 2010 by Simon Pulse
Hardcover: 224 pages
Book from: Around the World Tours
Popularity is the best revenge.

In the final weeks of eighth grade, Lauren Wood made a choice. She betrayed her best friend, Helen, in a manner so publicly humiliating that Helen had to move to a new town just to save face. Ditching Helen was worth it, though, because Lauren started high school as one of the It Girls--and now, at the start of her senior year, she's the cheerleading captain, the quarterback's girlfriend, and the undisputed queen bee. Lauren has everything she's ever wanted, and she has forgotten all about her ex-best friend.

But Helen could never forget Lauren. After three years of obsessing, she's moving back to her old town. She has a new name and a new look, but she hasn't dropped her old grudges. She has a detailed plan to bring down her former BFF by taking away everything that's ever been important to Lauren—starting with her boyfriend.

Watch out, Lauren Wood. Things are about to get bitchy. (Source)

Review
GETTING REVENGE ON LAUREN WOOD, by Eileen Cook, was high school revenge at its worst (and best). With healthy doses of bitchy-ness and secret identites, this book is the ultimate rule-book for female payback.

This book took girl-revenge to a whole other level. Lauren Wood, former best friend of Helen, made a complete mess of Helen's last few weeks of eighth grade, and Helen never forgot it. When Helen moved back to town, her detailed plan to take down all that Lauren cared about was in full swing. Helen, as Claire, targeted all the things that she thought Lauren couldn't live without, and took them out hard. Helen was such a great character. She was a little obsessed with Lauren, but I think middle school and high school years can really make or break someone, and Helen wanted her vengeance. And Lauren was the epitome of high school royalty. She was the most liked and feared girl, and a worthy opponent for Helen.

While reading, I had a flashback of the movie, Mean Girls, and the striking similarities both this book and the movie possessed. In both instances, a girl wanted revenge on a popular girl and chose to *take out* her prized objects. But along with the similarities, there were unique differences that made this book its own. For instance, Helen already knowing the high school popularity rules and playing them like a violin. I enjoyed the ride that Cook took me on in the quest for Helen to exact her revenge, and I liked the lessons that Helen learned in the process. The presence of karma was always in Helen's mind but most of the time she persuaded herself that she was performing a service to those affected by Lauren. Helen really learned through this process who she was and who she wanted to be, but to actually create that life for herself was quite difficult.

Each chapter furthered the suspense in the final act of how Helen was going to take down Lauren. I laughed and cringed while reading, hoping that Helen would make it through unscathed since her budding friendship with Brenda and relationship with Christopher was hanging in the balance. This was a fun and unforgiving book that did not hold back anything in the pursuit of creating "balance" against evil.

Insatiable (Meg Cabot) Review & Giveaway

Publisher:  William Morrow (June 8th 2010)
Hardcover: 451 pages
Book from Wiredset
Sick of vampires? So is Meena Harper.

But her boss is making her write about them anyway, even though Meena doesn’t believe in them.

Not that Meena isn’t familiar with the supernatural. See, Meena Harper knows how you’re going to die (not that you’re going to believe her; no one ever does).

But not even Meena’s precognition can prepare her for what happens when she meets—then makes the mistake of falling in love with—Lucien Antonescu, a modern-day prince with a bit of a dark side . . . a dark side a lot of people, like an ancient society of vampire-hunters, would prefer to see him dead for.

The problem is, he already is dead. Maybe that’s why he’s the first guy Meena’s ever met that she could see herself having a future with. See, while Meena’s always been able to see everyone else’s future, she’s never been able look into her own.

And while Lucien seems like everything Meena has ever dreamed of in a boyfriend, he might turn out to be more like a nightmare.

Now might be a good time for Meena to start learning to predict her own future . . .

If she even has one. (Source)

Review
INSATIABLE, by Meg Cabot, was a fiery love story in the midst of a supernatural battle. Cabot took a classic vampire legend and twisted it into a modern New York love story. Reader be aware, this is not your typical vampire book!

Each character in Insatiable was vivacious and one-of-a-kind. Meena seems like a normal woman just trying to find a man and a well-deserved promotion, but her supernatural abilities to see someone's death makes her truly unique. It was hard to believe this woman had such trouble in finding a man because within days of vampires taking over her beloved television program, two men fall head over heels for her! The tension between Lucien, Meena, and Alaric was captivating. I enjoyed the different point of views that the book revealed and I liked digging into these mens brains about how they truly felt about Meena. I really loved the sassy exchanges between characters even "the Contessa" next door and her constant needling in Meena's life made me laugh. And the general desperation for a job that her brother, Jon, possessed was very amusing.

I enjoyed the plot line with the soap opera and how the executives were changing a timeless drama into a modern vampire tale to snare in the newer audience. Cabot did an amazing job of weaving Meena's real-life into the supernatural twist of fate that occurred after meeting Lucien.

Also, how great is the cover? The red dress encompasses the title, Insatiable. And the stake and dragon arm clasp hints of the danger and suspense that is exposed beyond the cover.

Overall, I adored this book! I felt the characters were very real even with the added element of vampires and premonitions. I could imagine knowing any of these characters in real-life and experiencing the normal day-to-day that they do. Cabot left this book wide open for more tales of Meena fighting against vampires and trying to veer away from her love for Lucien. I really hope there is more to come!

Low Red Moon Review & Ivy Devlin Interview

Publisher: Bloomsbury USA Children's Books (September 14, 2010)
Hardcover: 256 pages
Book from Ivy Devlin
Avery Hood is reeling from the loss of her parents--and the fact that she can't remember what happened to them even though she was there.

She's struggling to adjust to life without them, and to living with her grandmother, when she meets Ben, who isn't like any guy she's ever met before.

It turns out there's a reason why, and Ben's secret may hold the key to Avery finding out what happened to her parents...

But what if that secret changes everything she knows about--and feels for--Ben? (Source)
Review
LOW RED MOON, by Ivy Devlin, is an original tale about werewolves stalking the residents of the forest outlining a small town. Devlin gives a fresh-perspective on the werewolf myth and takes you on a ride full of twists and turns leaving you aching for more.

I really enjoyed this book. The mystery about how Avery's parents were murdered kept me on my toes the whole time. And the supernatural element of werewolves and mind reading was enchanting.

Avery was a marvelous character. She did not fit in the mold of a typical high school girl. The home-school aspect kept her at the mental distance from others her age, and I think it made her more adult and able to handle the death of her parents more maturely. Her immediate bond with Ben left a lot of questions unanswered. The connection was definitely swoon-worthy but I would have liked Devlin to expand on their mental and physical link a bit more.

The question of who murdered Avery's parents was always lurking in the back of my mind. Avery searched her mind for clues of that night, but was blocked by the trauma. I enjoyed going on the journey with her to revisit the events of that night through bits of flashes that jogged her memory.

It has been a while since I have been surprised by an ending in a book, and this book did it! I was invested in one person from the start and Devlin completely took the rug out from under me. I really hope there is a sequel to this book that delves deeper into the supernatural background of Ben and Avery. Overall this was quite a unique book and a very strong start to Devlin's paranormal fiction debut.

Interview with Ivy Devlin

Kate: How would you describe your writing style?

Ivy: I like romance and paranormal (though I suppose that's a given!) I like twists and turns and moments where things aren't always what they seem--and I love writing YA!

Kate: You love writing YA, and I love reading it! :)  Can you name a few people who have influenced your writing career?

Ivy: I really didn't want to be a writer--I never thought of myself as a creative person. But once I wrote my first story, I was hooked! As far as influences, I think the most important thing anyone who wants to write can do is read.

Kate: Do you use media (music, film, etc) while thinking of ideas or while writing? If so, can you name a few?

Ivy: I do! You can check out the playlist for Low Red Moon at my website

Kate: That is a great playlist, it sounds like it would be a great start to a movie soundtrack for the book. As a child, did you always want to be a writer? What is one profession you think you might have done or fantasized about doing other than writing?

Ivy: I didn't want to be a writer when I was younger--I actually wanted to teach college! But that dream died about ten minutes in to my first grad school class!

Kate: What do you love about the young adult genre?

Ivy: Everything!

Kate: Me too! Can you describe Low Red Moon in 140 characters?

Ivy: Part murder mystery, part grief narrative, and part heart-stopping, headlong romance, Low Red Moon is a book to be devoured in one sitting.

Kate: I definitely devoured it! I really enjoyed the originality of the supernatural part of this book. Where did the initial idea for Low Red Moon come from? How did you expand on that to make it into the final product?

Ivy: I love the story of Little Red Riding Hood, and one day I was thinking about it, and about the girl and then I thought...what if???? Basically, I just wrote a book I wanted to read--and I hope that if you read it, you like it!

Kate: What type of research, if any, did you do for Low Red Moon?

Ivy: I did a lot of sketches of the town, and since I grew up around trees, the forest parts of the book came very easily to me. I also did research on some other things--Ben's last name is Dusic for a reason, for example.

Kate: I am always curious about how authors name their characters. Is there any significance in the names of the characters in Low Red Moon?

Ivy: Avery Hood--I think that one pretty much says it all there. And there is a reason Ben's last name is Dusic.

Kate:  What was your favorite part of the publishing process? Your least favorite?

Ivy: Selling the book--I never, EVER thought that would happen! My least favorite part has been all the confusion over the length of the book--the ARCs are under 200 pages, but that's because the font used is tiny. (ARCs are super expensive to make). The book is actually over 250 pages long.

Kate: Word around the internet rumor mill is that "Ivy Devlin" is not your true name but, *gasp*, is a pseudonym for author, Elizabeth Scott, can you confirm or deny?

Ivy: All I can say is that Elizabeth Scott and are are pretty tight--she and I even wore the exact same shoes to BEA, which I thought was pretty cool.

Kate: That is crazy! Kinda like showing up at prom with the same dress... Are you currently working on any projects? Can you tell us anything about them?

Ivy: I'm working on a few things...

Rising Shadow (Jacquelyn Wheeler) Review

Publisher: Jacquelyn Wheeler (September 10th 2009)
Paperback: 378 pages
Book from LaFemme Readers
Ashlyn Woods just transferred to one of the most beautiful campuses on the west coast, where she can't wait to start her life over as a normal college student. But her plans take an unexpected turn when she discovers that she is a Soterian: a person who develops amazing powers when the balance of good and evil shifts too far in evil's favor. Soon she and the other Soterians are studying martial arts and learning to use their powers to prevent California from being plunged into chaos. But they quickly discover that they're up against a much more dangerous enemy than they anticipated. And when Ashlyn meets Kai, a devastatingly gorgeous guitar player, she realizes she must sacrifice more than she ever imagined. (Source)

Review
RISING SHADOW, by Jacquelyn Wheeler, was an action-packed story about a team of supernaturals and their quest of balancing good and evil. Wheeler will stretch your imagination as you take the journey in discovering hidden talents and powers within her characters.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I really enjoyed the idea of the Soterians. I thought Wheeler's idea of balancing good and evil, and not destroying evil (because that is impossible) was a unique perspective on crime-fighting. I liked learning about the different jobs of each Soterian and the training that went with it. The relationship between Ashlyn and Kai was a bit cliche but really sweet. I liked getting to know the minor characters that were encountered and understanding their role in Ashlyn's life.

A couple things that I did not care for was the dialogue and forced views. I felt there was too much dialogue as a whole. There were a lot of conversations between characters that could have been skipped over. For instance, there were many moments of just having dialogue to fill a silence. This dialogue did not move the story forward and I found myself getting distracted by it. In terms of forced views, it is understandable that authors like to write what they are passionate about, but in this book I felt like I was being forced to think a certain way. I felt that Ashlyn was trying to force others to be a vegetarian and hate drinking. I understood that Ashlyn went through terrible things in her past with drinking, but the constant reminder was too much at times.

Overall, I really enjoyed the idea of this book, it was fresh and full of action. But personally, I did not like it as much as I hoped I would.

On My Wishlist (3)

On My Wishlist is a fun weekly event hosted by Book Chick City and runs every Saturday. It's where I list all the books I desperately want but haven't actually bought yet. They can be old, new or forthcoming. It's also an event that you can join in with too - Mr Linky is always at the ready for you to link your own 'On My Wishlist' post. If you want to know more click here.

This week I am doubling up again with a dose of Suzanne Collins! I bought Catching Fire from my library bookstore, which sparked me to read The Hunger Games. I sped through The Hunger Games and I am currently reading Catching Fire and soon will be the final installment of this series, the long awaited, Mockingjay! This week for OMW I am wishing for the bread to complete my Hunger Games sandwich.

Click on the cover for my review

Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games twice. But now that she’s made it out of the bloody arena alive, she’s still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge. Who do they think should pay for the unrest? Katniss. And what’s worse, President Snow has made it clear that no one else is safe either. Not Katniss’s family, not her friends, not the people of District 12. Powerful and haunting, this thrilling final installment of Suzanne Collins’s groundbreaking The Hunger Games trilogy promises to be one of the most talked about books of the year. (Source)

New Book Home!

So last week I went to Walmart to get a bookcase and this is what I ended up with:

Another full bookcase....LOL

I needed a short bookcase because my upstairs office ceiling is slanted so I can't have a tall one. And I didn't like how this three-shelf bookcase makes only two shelves big enough for books! As you can see I had to pile most books sideways because they would not fit. Shoot. I don't like to double up the shelves because then I forget what books are back there, I need to *see* them. And that top shelf can't even hold one book vertically. Oh well. I will keep looking! But at the very least, my books are not strewn all over the floor and my desk.

The best part was that I built it myself and it is still standing! Urm.. I think I might have used a little unnecessary force to get it together, but it worked.

Tell Me A Secret (Holly Cupala) Review

Publisher: HarperCollins (June 22, 2010)
Hardcover: 256 pages
Book from Around The World Tours
Tell me a secret, and I'll tell you one…

In the five years since her bad-girl sister Xanda’s death, Miranda Mathison has wondered about the secret her sister took to the grave, and what really happened the night she died. Now, just as Miranda is on the cusp of her dreams—a best friend to unlock her sister’s world, a ticket to art school, and a boyfriend to fly her away from it all—Miranda has a secret all her own.

Then two lines on a pregnancy test confirm her worst fears. Stripped of her former life, Miranda must make a choice with tremendous consequences and finally face her sister’s demons and her own. (Source)

Review
TELL ME A SECRET, by Holly Cupala, was a sensational story about teenage pregnancy and the impact it has on everyone involved. Cupala creatively weaved the past and present into one intriguingly original tale. Each chapter dug a little deeper into this family's tragic past as the present situation unfolded keeping me guessing until the very end.

I immediately became emotionally connected to the characters in this book. Mandy was an amazing heroine. Since Xanda played the role of rebel while Mandy was the angel, her being pregnant escalated the tension at home. But Mandy dealt with her church-going mother and workaholic father the best she could. Kamran was definitely a change in pace as a not-so-typical love interest. His shady relationship with Mandy's best friend, Delaney, made my heart ache for Mandy, who was dealing with so much on her own. And Delaney... I don't know anyone who will read this book and not want to smack her. She was such a drama-queen, and I don't know how Mandy was able to stay friends with her for so long. I suppose it was because Xanda's death truly changed who Mandy wanted to be and what life she would make for herself. Even with the many strikes against Mandy, she succeeded in staying honest with herself and always tried to do what was right.

Cupala composed such an heart-rendering book. Specific scenes that come to mind was the night Xanda died and the entire time that Mandy was in the hospital. After finishing the book, I took a deeper look into the title and its meaning. There were so many instances of secrets being kept and exploited it was astonishing. Each new revealing secret was bigger than the previous and it's what made this book pretty fantastic.

Things I Know About Love (Kate Le Vann) Review

Publisher: EgmontUSA (June 22, 2010)
Hardcover: 160 pages
Received from: Publisher
Livia's experience of love has been disappointing to say the least. But all that is about to change. After years of illness, she's off to spend the summer with her brother in America. She's making up for lost time, and she's writing it all down in her private blog. America is everything she ever dreamed of - and then she meets Adam. Can Livia put the past behind her and risk falling in love again? (Source)

Review
THINGS I KNOW ABOUT LOVE, by Kate Le Vann, was a lovely story about a girl given a second chance at life and not wasting one moment of it. Le Vann created truly amazing characters that I was attached to very quickly.

I liked the "blog" format of the book because I enjoyed getting the deeper look into her thoughts and dreams. In the beginning, she stated that she would be honest during her blogging venture, and was she! I had to laugh at many of the clumsy and awkward mistakes she made with guys. And I was close to tears reading how she dealt with her illness and the segregation she felt from others her age.

Livia and Adam were delightful and adorable together. Livia inspired Adam to create a blog, and his short and sweet posts were right to the point, just like him. He completely changed the rules of love and surprised Livia so many times. They were mutually smitten with each other, and it was hard for me not to be. I felt all warm and fuzzy just thinking about how the universe brought Livia to America if only just to be with Adam.

This is a nice and short book full of laughs and tears. It gave me new faith in love-at-first-sight and being honest with one you love. And I think you might learn something from this seventeen-year-old's list of the things she knows about love.

Open Road Media Featured Video: Richelle Mead

New York Times bestselling writer Richelle Mead writes hugely popular urban fantasy novels for adults and teens alike. Her vampire, succubi and supernatural series delight readers around the world. She explores the mysterious and paranormal underworld so you don’t have to.

I just wanted to introduce you all to Open Road Media. In case you haven't already heard of them, they are "a digital content company that publishes and markets ebooks by creating connections between authors and their audiences across multiple platforms." (from Open Road Mission Statement)

I really enjoyed this "inside look" to Richelle's life in Seattle and her explanation of her Succubus series. Open Road Media did a phenomenal job on the video, and I can't wait to see what future projects they work on with Richelle and other similar authors.

Bloggiesta Finish Line!

Pedro!
Plan. Edit. Develop. Review. Organize.

So here we are at the end of Bloggiesta. I have learned and completed so much in these past few days and I am excited to implement these ideas into my blog to make it more functional and overall a great book blog!

June 2010 Mini-Challenges:

~Kim and Jackie at the Blog Improvement Project : This challenge showed different sites to take your blog to the next level and making effective lists. I am definitely signing up for their year-long event as well.

~Jennifer at Girls Gone Reading : Review Policy. I cleaned up my policy and make it more clear and concise.

~Sarah at Puss Reboots : RSS Feeds. I already had an RSS icon, but I did add my RSS to my header too, I did not know how to do that previous. Thanks Sarah!

~Pam from MotherReader : Be Brave! For this one, I drafted an email to independent book stores in my area to join up with me to support their business via advertising on my blog.

~Danielle at There’s a Book : Stats. For this challenge, I fixed my Google Analytics page with my new domain, and now I have a better idea how to view my stats.

~Cass at Bonjour Cass : Commenting. I went around to many blogs this weekend and put meaningful comments on their postings. I saw a lot of really great blogs that I added to my RSS feed too!

Flashback Mini-Challenges:

~Rebecca at The Book Lady’s Blog : Feed Reader. I cleaned up my feed reader and labeled each feed : "Book Blog Name (Name of Blogger)" to make it more uniform and informational.

~Jackie from Farm Lane Books : Back up your blog. I backed up my blog and set an alarm on my phone for every two weeks to back up so I can always refer to previous templates if (heaven forbid) something happens to my blog.

~Trish from Hey Lady! Watcha Readin’? : Favicon & Gravatar. I have heard these phrases before but I never really knew what they meant. So I set up both for my blog!

~Michelle from GalleySmith : Anchor text. How to make the most out of your link love. This was a fun challenge! From now on I am going wisely use my anchor links.

~Danielle from There’s a Book : Cheat Sheet. I created a *cheat sheet* with templates for my memes and reviews.

~Pam from Bookalicio.us : Copyright. I added a 2010 Copyright to the bottom of my page!

~Amy from My Friend Amy : Blogging Buddy. I asked a fellow blogger to be a blogging buddy of mine, and she said yes! Be sure to visit Meaghan at A Bookworm's Haven.

~Jenn from Jenn’s Bookshelves  : Brainstorming Topics. I created a graph to *extend* my posts further into great content posts. Five of these ideas are:

  1. Helpful hints on book blogging
  2. Favorite book themes
  3. Informational posting about supernatural creatures
  4. Featured literary couples
  5. Expand on current (or just read) subjects in books that interest me

~Beth from Beth Fish Reads : List and opinion posts. I got a lot of new ideas from this challenge. One idea that I got is to create a series of opinion posts on "Why I Love.."

~Emily from Emily’s Reading Room :  Vanity alerts. I set up Google Alerts for my blog name and address.

Deborah from Books, Movies, and Chinese Food : Elevator Pitch. I pretty much perfected this at BEA when I had to explain my blog to a ton of people. This is what I said:

I Just Wanna Sit Here and Read! is a book blog where I do reviews on all young adult books, and adult paranormal/fantasy, and chick lit. I do author interviews, giveaways, guest posts, and book tours.

Drea from Book Blather : Learn a New Tip or Two. There is a WEALTH of information at this post and the links included. I read a few and I am going to bookmark the rest for later.

Ruth from Bookish Ruth : Webgrader. I was actually surprised that I got a 79/100 for my website grade! I appreciate all of my readers and I hope to get a higher grade as the years progress.

Lynn from Chronicle of an Infant Bibliophile : Blog Directories. I requested to be added to Kidlitosphere Central & Fyrefly's Book Blogs Search Engine. I am already a member of Book Blogs Ning and The YA Book Blog Directory.

Kristen from Bookworming in the 21st Century : Blogger mentoring program and forum. I joined The Bloggie Cult and linked a *hint* on the forums for newer bloggers.

Here are my completed Tasks (outside of those for mini-challenges):

  • Write reviews.
  • Write backup posts for a rainy day.
  • Write guest posts.
  • Clean up and update challenge lists.
  • Visit the Blogging Tips group on the Book Blogs Ning and find ways to improve my blog.
  • Revise business cards.
  • Make 3-month posting calendar
  • Detailed rating system
  • Catalogue books
  • Completed memes several weeks in advance.
I am so proud of the work I have done and now I am able to relax and read a bit more because the *thinking* part is taken care of and I just need to do the writing. But once you get me going I am unstoppable, so I am not concerned with that. I tried to stay away from Twitter this weekend because I am always distracted by contests, etc. so that is why I did not make a ton of updates.

Final Thoughts:

Total Hours: 24.5 hours!
Total Comments: I did not keep a good record but I think I made about 40 comments throughout the whole weekend. :)
What I liked best: The challenges! They were so informative and I feel such a great triumph that I accomplished so much to make my blog the best it can be!
Constructive Criticism: I don't really have much for this time around. This was my first time participating so I am not sure how others were run. So I would say nothing right now.

Thanks to Maw Books for hosting, and all the mini-challenge hosts! Until next time, Ole!
