Hardcover: 543 pages
From Goodreads. Cheerleader Isobel Lanley is horrified when she is paired with Varen Nethers for an English project, which is due—so unfair—on the day of the rival game. Cold and aloof, sardonic and sharp-tongued, Varen makes it clear he’d rather not have anything to do with her either. But when Isobel discovers strange writing in his journal, she can’t help but give this enigmatic boy with the piercing eyes another look.
Soon, Isobel finds herself making excuses to be with Varen. Steadily pulled away from her friends and her possessive boyfriend, Isobel ventures deeper and deeper into the dream world Varen has created through the pages of his notebook, a realm where the terrifying stories of Edgar Allan Poe come to life.
As her world begins to unravel around her, Isobel discovers that dreams, like words, hold more power than she ever imagined, and that the most frightening realities are those of the mind. Now she must find a way to reach Varen before he is consumed by the shadows of his own nightmares.
His life depends on it.
Review
NEVERMORE, by Kelly Creagh, is a dark story that weaves contemporary fiction with a hint of the paranormal. Isobel is mortified when she is partnered with Varen for a school project. But soon enough, their project which revolves around Edgar Allen Poe takes them on a journey into a dangerous dream world in which Varen has created.
This book as been on my TBR list for quite some time and I was thrilled that I loved it. It was a long journey (500+ pages) but well worth it. I liked getting to know Isobel and watching her grow into a very strong female character. The introduction of Varen into her life throws her popularity for a loop when she challenges everything she thought was important. Varen was quite a unique character and I found myself wanting to know his story just like Isobel yearned to as well.
The dreamworld that Creagh created was definitely dark and twisty. The visuals that she brought to life on the pages were phenominal. I liked how she weaved the poetry and mysteries around Poe's death into the story surrounding these two teens. This book is definitely one of a kind, and the cliffhanger at the end will leave you screaming for the sequel (I know I was!)
