Eron De Marchelle isn't supposed to feel a connection. He is a Sandman, a supernatural being whose purpose is to seduce human charges to sleep. While he can communicate with his charges in their dreams, he isn't encouraged to--after all, getting too involved in one human's life would prevent him helping his other charges get their needed rest.
But he can't deny that he feels something for Julia. Julia, with her fiery red hair and her sad dreams. Just weeks ago, her boyfriend died in a car accident, and Eron can tell that she feels more alone than ever. Eron was human once too, many years ago, and he remembers how it felt to lose the one he loved. Eron has always felt protective of Julia . . . but now, when she seems to need him more than ever, he can't seem to reach her . . .
Sandmen are forbidden from communicating with humans outside their dreams. But will Eron be willing to risk everything for a chance to be with the person he loves? (Source)
Review
SLEEPLESS, by Cyn Balog, was an entertaining and romantic tale of a Sandman and his human charge. This is my first experience with a Sandman book and I really enjoyed it! The life of Sandmen that Balog created was fascinating to read. I liked the process that these fantasy-beings used to put their charges to sleep, and that they were able to enter their dreams if they wanted.
The characters in this book were unique. Julia has a haunted past that she felt made her weak, but while dating Griffin she is able to 'get over' her problems, at least for a little while. Eron was her Sandman since forever so he knew Julia better than anyone, even her sarcastic boyfriend. I liked the connection between Julia and Eron. Since they have been 'together' for so long, it seemed like second nature for them to really understand each other. I also enjoyed learning about Eron's past and how his actions those many years ago affected his current mannerisms.
One thing that I disliked about this story was the abrupt ending. I felt like the tension was building up to this one event and when it happened, it was very out of character and totally out of left-field. I was quite disappointed with these turn of events when I was hoping for more.
Overall, this was a fun and quick read. Other than my issue with the ending, I recommend this story to anyone who is looking for a book that will keep you wide awake.
